Don't fear the truth about sex

SEATTLE - There must be a whole lotta people out there who are afraid of sex.

I mention this only because of the controversy swirling around a pair of bills in the state Legislature right now.

They focus on a revolutionary concept.

That is: If a public school is going to teach sex ed, then the information has to be medically accurate, and the school can't teach abstinence as the ONLY way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

How's that for radical?

Anyway, those folks afraid of sex seem to figure that if kids are told about condoms and such, that means the kids will think they're being encouraged to go out and do the big nasty.

Kind of like how when kids are told about logarithms, they just run mathematically amok.

Look, there's nothing in House Bill 1297, or Senate Bill 5297, that says schools must tell teenagers to go out and have sex. These bills aren't about behavior.

They're about giving kids accurate information.

How they use that information depends on what Mom and Dad teach them about being responsible.

And if parents haven't done that, well, maybe they should be afraid.

If kids don't get their informationfrom their parents or a reliable source, you and I both know they get it from other kids. This is a scary thought. My son came up to me the other day and said his friend down the street had a magazine they were looking at. (Keep in mind he's 7) He wanted to know why the girls in the picures wanted big chickens...kid you not. You see my son has no idea what a c*ck is and his friend who is a year younger than him, said well that's a rooster.(swear to god it was so hard to keep from laughing on this one) So here they are looking at a dirty mag trying to pzzle out where they are going to put the chickens. Needless to say we had the sex talk and I attempted to clear upp as much as I thought a 7 yr old show know....oh and made a mommy call to my neighbor about her son's choice in reading material.[LOL]

That's the problem parents aren't telling kids anything and they are getting misinformation and getting sick. You did good. If more parent talked to their kids I think it would cut down on a lot of kids getting hurt...
