Bend Over and Take it like a Good Girl

April 29, 2008 / by mmmhollywould

Okay my friend East Kentucky Progressive has managed to raise my ire, again, as cute as he is he is very good at getting my panties in a bunch.

Now let’s first talk about this woman the “Measure” was named after Lilly Ledbetter.  So according to this article she worked for Goodyear for over two decades and did not realize she was getting paid less than her male counterparts?  Now would you not think that sometime during those two decades she might have found out that the guys were getting paid more?  If not by them dropping hints, outright telling her, letting hints slip or at the very least seeing the difference in their standard of living? Why wait until now?  Seemed like prime time to get a fat lawsuit?  If she was going to sue two decades is tooo long to wait.  You see the nice thing about jobs is you pick where you live and where you work.  If she did not like the fact that she felt she was being under paid this is when you get a new job even if you have to relocate.  Do you not think this would have looked nice on a Resume?  They did not make her stay two decades, she chose to.  That is the nice thing about America, you get to choose.

Some people think men and women should be viewed equally in the workforce and there is a reason they are not and should not be. First and foremost being that woman have babies and leave for maternity leave to have said babies, take off work if they are single moms or take off work instead of their husbands to take care of said children when they are sick or for various other reasons they MUST take off work for their kids.  Employers do not and should not have to hire these ladies over a man hell often times they will take a man with less qualifications over the problems they will inherit.  Is it fair?  YES.

We as women know when we have children be it with our husband or some guy at a bar that we will be the primary care givers.  We are aware of that before we have sex even if we had no intention of getting pregnant or later divorced, We made a choice then. We made a choice when we chose to be the custodial parent.  Should an employer be expected to pay for the choices we made that while may have made us a superior parent made us an inferior employee?

This is a huge reason women are paid less than men.  They cost a hell of a lot more to employ.

So now you will say that we, “are a second class citizen to the old rich white guy republican party”  *coughs*  Bull shit!

The people spouting this rhetoric need to look at the education trends:

Between 1970 and 2000, the overall number of women enrolled in postsecondary institutions grew by 136%, while their numbers in professional school grew by a whopping 853%.

In 2004, 9.9 million women were attending the nation's accredited postsecondary schools, compared to only 7.4 million men.

Do you doubt that this trend will and has put women in the very positions that decide the pay for not only the very women that are “discriminated against” but men as well?

So why are we blaming the “rich republicans’?

As this trend continues and more and more women assume power positions we will soon only have ourselves to blame, In fact I already believe we only have ourselves to blame because women already hold these positions and have held more and more since 1970. Not only that women are willing to bow down and take it instead of relocating their family for a better job  or doing anything that might be “hard” for them instead we are trained to scream “discrimination” and hope for a hand out from the fat white guys.

And what about the single career women?? Why is she being punished?

And why should she run and not stay and fight if it is a job she likes?

Why shouldn't a capable woman fight the "Good Old Man's club"?

And business's pay for alcoholic male employees, for men harrassing women sexually on the job, etc., but they are not punished by making less money than the women with children.

In brais, itelligence and logic women are the equal of men and should be paid the equal of men.

Women in power??? Come on--the figures alone show you how small they are compared to men. How many women billionaires, millionaires are there compared to men--except maybe the women (Walmart, Heinz, etc.,) who have inherited it.??

You really don't think women should get equal pay for equal work???

    I disagree with you.

Why do you disagree with me?

  • ygermino said 2 months ago

Women should demand for their rights.  If the company they are working in does not agree, then they can file formal complains with the relevant labor agency.  Or they can lobby their council, congressmen etc. so that they make sure these electected law makers are aware of their needs and should do something to support their cause

The point is SOME women may not be performing equal work. If she is absent more than her male counterparts then is putting out the work? Secondly, companies pay for men harrassing women sexually? Yes they do, as PUNISHMENT. Duh!

  • mmmhollywould said 2 months ago

Would you please, please read my article and tell me where this article in any way touches on sexual harassment?

This article is about sex discrimination, not sexual harassment and women drop out of the workforce a f*** of a lot more to push out puppies than their are sexual harassment cases.

Reading comprehension and word definitions are good things to know, DUH.

be realistic, when a woman is hired, she is offered a salary, now how would the company, from that time know that she will be absent frequently in her job? etc. etc.

it only means, many companies have a bias against women employees, even before they start to work!

Yes they do, that is what I just said and for good reason.

This has been a pet-peeve of mine for a long time!!! As a whole I do agree with you... There are exceptions as I've learned over time..Guess what I'm trying to say here is it does depend on the job a women is hired to do...Case in point- working as a nurse and being female...Most nurses are female, male nurses are few as a whole.A male nurse will be offered more pay than a women. My question is why would that be?!?! Well to answer my own question, its because there are not all that many 'male nurses'! So they are seen as a treasure to have...Now I ask you, would I be paid more if I was hired as a auto mechanic due to the fact I'm a female and trained as well as any male mechanic?I don't think so!!!

How in the world do you work for a company for two decades and not know your getting paid less that your male co-workers???How dumb was that!!!Did she not have a coffe break/lunch etc. with her co-workers? Believe me I'd sure have know,I'd of asked for more money,if I didn't get what I felt I was deserved,I'd find another job!!!As you have stated,it's a free country!!! We all females/males have choices.... Interesting post Holly!

I am a male nurse, and at my last job I got 30 cents less than a female coworker with the same degree and one year less experience. There tends to be a hidden animosity, I think. My Director of Nursing told me blankly one day that I have an advantage, male physicians will listen to me over a female counterpart. I guess this justified her paying me less for the same work...

  • mmmhollywould said 2 months ago

Forgive me.  Read it and think of it as a response to me, there was a serious miscommunication because the reply system is not working correctly.  Please for vive me and i will be writing an articl about this!  :)

Was that title meant for me...

Yes it it true there is a variety of factors that are not taken into account in the "wage gap". I can agree there. BUT, I don't think things like the kids or Maturnity leave are considered when employment is. As you know, I work in a female dominated profession, so if that was their criteria, the nursing shortage would be a hell of a lot worse.

"why are we blaming republicans" They filibustered the ledbetter bill, they wouldn't even let it come to a vote on the floor. IE they either don't care, or are continuing on this trend to make Democrats look inept by filibustering everything they try to do.

So, the statistics you site, and because I know you and know you are really smart, I assume they are correct, shows that McCain's statement reveals two things about him. One, he does in fact assume without bothering to read about 50% of our population that you gals are just uneducated, and thus the pay gap is "justified". And two, that the pay differences are caused by an independent variable separate from education and qualifications. Right?

Thank you for helping to make my point through elaboration....

""So now you will say that we, “are a second class citizen to the old rich white guy republican party”  *coughs*  Bull shit!""

OK, so if they refused to hear the bill on the floor, and they have no Idea the educational trends of women in our modern world, the question becomes why do they see this as a bad thing? What rationale do they have to prevent female employees from suing an employer who has been proven to be paying her less than her male counterparts (assuming equal (not better as your research shows) educational trends and experience?)

  • ekyprogressive said 2 months ago

that about the being a male nurse paragraph was suppose to be a reply to magicdragonfly...

  • ekyprogressive said 2 months ago

You didn't catagorize this in "special education" did you?

  • mmmhollywould said 2 months ago

    lol, no

  • magicdragonfly2 said 2 months ago

WOW!!! eky thank's for the info..That does sound to me that there was hidden animosity there with your Director...I feel that a man in the nursing profession is very honorable..Both male and female nurses should be paid the same when doing the same job.I wasn't in anyway knocking men in the nursing field..I hope you've a better more equal paying employment now..Nice to meet you ekyprogressive..My daughter is a nurse,my sister inlaw is a head nurse,I don't believe eather would treat you any different...  :-)

Not all men are paid equally for the same work or having the same experience either.  The salary you accept (if negotiated) should be fair to you.  If you do not feel it is fair, fight for what you believe is fair.

I agree that women have it harder getting a fair shake in the workforce than men do but not all women.  Further, some women know when they are getting a raw deal and they deal with it in their own ways.  What I have found quite often is that women will betray other women and even help a man get ahead before they help themselves or another woman.

It is possible that having been in the workforce so much longer than women, men have an advantage at navigating the minefields and obstacles that represent the ladders of acheivement and advancement.
Again, that is not the case for all women.  Some women are better than many, most or all men at getting ahead.  How many other women are helped by their example?  How many women are helping to make a difference in the lives of young women so the can see their own worth, value it and protect it from the vultures of the world?  How many men are doing this?  I am a brother, a father and an uncle and I have not done my part within my own family to help my sister, my daughter or my neieces be brighter, stronger and braver women who value themselves more than the men in their lives.

I try to give time to schools and young children to help them at that the grade school level and ask my wife to do the same.  The example we set is the measure by which our girls will gauge their achievements and their worth in their futures as women.

It's a great blog entry but I always feel that we need to initiate change at our most immediate level first.  Secondly, we can work to change law and policy.  But always changing the way we see our world will help us to change the way it is.  Believing in ourselves is paramount.  Obviously you women don't have a problem with that so I hope you are sharing that with more young women to help embolden and strengthen them.  God knows you are the stronger sex but I would like to see more of your wisdom pervade the policies of our society and the world.
